Crook handles are bent by hand using a fine balance of eye and steam, embellished with either a
Gold Plated or a hallmarked Sterling Silver collar engraved with our Royal appointment for umbrella making.
There are two different types of construction, a "solid" where the handle and
shaft is one continuous piece of wood or a "two piece" where the shaft is made
of straight wood and the crook handle is produced in cane or covered in
leather. Please look at the photograph to the left ...a "two piece" is shown to the left
and a "solid" is shown to the right.
You will find two piece construction when selecting the more exotic handles
...Malacca Cane, Whangee (bamboo), Leather Covered and the like. These
handles are typically attached to a straight Tulip wood shaft. With a
solid shaft, or one piece umbrella, the wood portion of the umbrella is one
continuous piece of wood. It will start out perfectly straight in the case
of a Maple, Hickory, Oak, and Cherry and then is carved to the exact shape
required ...and then bent with steam and heat. With the "barks" such as a
Bark Cherry, Bark Chestnut, Bark Ash, Fired Ash and the Polished Chestnut, the
branch must be the proper diameter when it comes off the tree. With these
umbrellas, the crook portion is the actual width of the branch. In the
case of the Polished Chestnut, it would be a Bark Chestnut with the bark
removed. These umbrellas have a little more character and are, possibly
considered less formal. ...Although, a very popular, and fantastic
looking, formal umbrella is our Bark Cherry with a Silk Canopy and Sterling
Silver Collar!
The frame is made from fine oil tempered steel to ensure even flexibility and unrivalled resilience against the fiercest of weather. The springs are individually crafted from nickel silver and to add strength, all ribs and stretchers are hand wired together.
The Brigg Umbrella canopy is made from the finest quality twill nylon or waterproofed English silk. Again, it is the finer details which set the Brigg apart: amongst them are lacquered metal tips, sewn on by hand, and the fabric band which fastens with a real mother-of-pearl button.
When making your selection, you may wish to consider the following: You may consider a size to suit
the user best. Our Gentlemen's Umbrella is available in three standard
sizes: a size 25, size 26 and size 27. A size 25 Umbrella measures
approximately 35.5 inches in overall length with an open canopy diameter of 40
inches. A size 26 Umbrella measures approximately 36.25 inches in overall
length with an open canopy diameter of 42 inches. A size 27 Umbrella
measures approximately 38.25 inches in overall length with an open canopy
diameter of 42 inches. We would suggest that Our
Standard size 26 is perfect for a gentlemen of 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 2
inches in height.
UMBRELLA PRICING INCLUDES A SOLID COLOUR NYLON CANOPY AND
A PLATED GOLD COLLAR engraved with Prince Charles' Royal Warrant (with the
exception of The Prince of Wales Umbrella which is offered with a Sterling
Silver Collar only). Nylon Canopies are typically produced in Black,
although, we are pleased to produce a bespoke umbrella with the canopy cover of
your choosing. The available Nylon Canopy solid colour and tartan plaid
range is quite broad. Please enquire regarding your interest. There
is no additional fee for other solid colour canopy colours. Tartan Plaid
Nylon and
Tartan Plaid Cotton Canopies are available with an additional fee of $60.00. Traditional
English Waterproofed Black Silk canopies are available with an additional fee of
$500.00. Traditional Black Cotton Canopies are available with an
additional fee of $65.00. Please

in Black, on occasion, however, we offer additional colours such as red, green,
navy, and ivory. Recently we have been producing umbrellas with a broad
range of silk colours ...please let us know what you have in mind and we will do
our best to accommodate you.
OUTER COVERS, sized to suit your umbrella, with Mother of Pearl Button closure
are available. Outer Covers are often requested when it is expected
that your umbrella may not be used often or may be stored in an area that may
soil the canopy. Nylon Outer Covers are available with a fee of $35.00.
Silk Outer Covers are available with a fee of $70.00. Tartan Outer
Covers are available with an additional fee of $45.00. Cotton Outer Covers
are available with an additional fee of $55.00.
STERLING SILVER COLLARS are available with an additional fee of $50.00.
WE ARE PLEASED TO PERSONALIZE YOUR UMBRELLA. Machine Engrave
Personalization is available with a fee of $45.00. There is space to
engrave up to three initials only. Typically there are floating
dots/diamonds between each block letter, which you may request. When ordering a Sterling Silver
Collar, Hand Engraving is a possibility. Initials only with a fee of
$80.00. Name only with a fee of $120.00. Name and Telephone Number
with a fee of $150.00. The hand engraving is quite special.
